What is SPC Flooring? Everything You Need to Know

SPC flooring has become one of the most popular choices for UK homeowners over the last few years — and once you understand what it's made of and how it performs, it's easy to see why. Here's everything you need to know.

SPC Flooring — The Basics

SPC stands for Stone Plastic Composite. At its core — literally — it's a rigid flooring built from a blend of limestone powder, polyvinyl chloride, and stabilisers. That combination creates a board that is essentially inert. It doesn't bend, it doesn't flex, and crucially it doesn't expand and contract the way traditional wood or even standard LVT can when temperatures shift.

If you've ever had a floating floor that developed gaps in winter or started buckling near a warm conservatory window, you'll understand exactly why that matters. SPC solves that problem at the material level — the stone composite core simply isn't affected by temperature and humidity changes the way organic materials are.

SPC is not to be confused with standard LVT, which is typically flexible and far more susceptible to temperature movement. SPC is a rigid core format — it's a different and superior construction for most domestic and commercial applications.

How is SPC Flooring Constructed?

Understanding the layer construction of SPC flooring helps explain why it performs so well. From bottom to top, a typical SPC plank looks like this:

1

Integrated Underlay

Pre-attached to the back of every plank, the underlay provides acoustic cushioning, smooths minor subfloor imperfections, and adds thermal comfort underfoot.

2

Stone Plastic Composite Core

The rigid heart of the plank. Made from limestone powder and PVC, this layer provides the dimensional stability, waterproof properties, and structural strength that makes SPC so durable.

3

Printed Design Layer

A high-definition photographic print that replicates the look of wood, stone, or concrete. Modern printing technology means contemporary SPC designs are genuinely convincing in a way that older vinyl flooring simply wasn't.

4

Wear Layer

The clear protective coating on top. Our flooring uses a 0.5mm wear layer — light commercial specification — which provides excellent scratch and scuff resistance for busy homes and commercial spaces alike.

The Key Benefits of SPC Flooring

Benefit

100% Waterproof

Every layer of SPC flooring is waterproof throughout — not just at the surface. Suitable for bathrooms, kitchens, and wet areas.

Benefit

Dimensionally Stable

The rigid stone core means SPC won't expand, contract, or warp with temperature and humidity changes the way wood-based floors can.

Benefit

Scratch Resistant

Our 0.5mm wear layer puts it in light commercial spec — tough enough for pets, kids, and high traffic areas without showing its age.

Is SPC Flooring Waterproof?

Yes — completely. One of the most significant advantages of SPC flooring over wood and laminate is that it's waterproof throughout its entire construction. The stone plastic composite core doesn't absorb water, swell, or harbour mould the way wood fibre does. This makes SPC genuinely suitable for every room in the home — including bathrooms and kitchens where wood and laminate would be a risk.

It's worth distinguishing between waterproof and water resistant. Most laminate flooring is water resistant at the surface — it can handle spills if you mop them up quickly. But let water sit, or let it get into the joins, and you'll eventually see swelling and joint failure. SPC doesn't have this problem. Read more about how SPC flooring is waterproof.

SPC vs LVT — What's the Difference?

SPC is a type of LVT — specifically, it's a rigid core LVT. Standard LVT has a flexible construction that, while still durable, is more susceptible to temperature movement and subfloor imperfections. SPC's stone composite core makes it considerably more stable and better suited to floating installation over most existing subfloors without extensive preparation.

In practical terms, SPC is the better choice for most domestic and commercial applications. It's more stable, easier to install, more tolerant of imperfect subfloors, and typically more durable over the long term. Read our full guide to LVT flooring.

Is SPC Flooring Compatible With Underfloor Heating?

Yes — our SPC flooring is compatible with water-fed underfloor heating systems. The rigid stone composite core handles the gentle warmth of underfloor heating well, provided the surface temperature is kept below 27°C. Bring the system up and down gradually rather than switching between extremes, and allow the flooring to acclimatise to the room for 2 to 3 days before fitting.

Please note our integrated underlay is not compatible with electric underfloor heating systems. If you have electric UFH, contact us before ordering and we'll advise on the right approach.

How Easy is SPC Flooring to Install?

Very. Our SPC flooring uses a Uniclick locking system that allows each plank to click firmly to its neighbour in a single angled motion — no adhesive, no specialist tools, no stress. Most confident DIYers can fit a room in a day. All you need is a hammer, knocking block, Stanley knife, and square edge.

Because our flooring comes with integrated underlay pre-attached to every plank, there's no separate underlay to buy, cut, or tape down before you start. You unbox, acclimatise for 2 to 3 days, and fit. Read our full step by step installation guide.

Is SPC Flooring Right For You?

If you're looking for a floor that looks premium, performs brilliantly, and requires minimal maintenance — SPC flooring is hard to beat. It's the right choice for busy family homes, rental properties, and commercial spaces where durability and practicality matter as much as aesthetics.

It's also the right choice if you want a single floor type that works throughout the whole house — living rooms, hallways, kitchens, bathrooms — without needing to compromise on practicality in the wet areas.
